Greens Announce General Election Candidates for Vauxhall, Streatham, Dulwich & West Norwood
28 April 2017
The Green Party has today revealed the names of the candidates who will be contesting the General Election in the three Lambeth constituencies.
For Dulwich & West Norwood, which includes parts of the London borough of Southwark as well as Lambeth, the Greens have selected Rashid Nix. Rashid, a filmmaker from Brixton, also stood for the constituency in 2015, coming fourth with a 9.4% share of the vote. More recently he was the Green Party’s candidate for the London Assembly constituency of Lambeth and Southwark, coming third ahead of the Liberal Democrats.
Rashid said: “I’m delighted once again to have the opportunity to represent The Green Party as parliamentary candidate for Dulwich & West Norwood. The Greens are often counted out but last year we came within a whisker of beating Labour in Gipsy Hill, proving that the people are no longer going to accept this false choice between two flawed establishment parties. The Green revolution is coming.”
The Green Party candidate for Streatham will be Nicole Griffiths. Nicole is currently studying Applied Social Science, Community and Youth Work at Goldsmiths University. She also works part time as an Arts Support officer at a North London school - a position which had been full time but has been affected by cuts under the last two governments. In 2015, with Jonathan Bartley as the candidate, The Green Party achieved 9% of the vote in Streatham. Jonathan went on to be named co-leader of The Green Party of England and Wales alongside Caroline Lucas.
Nicole said: “I’m hugely proud to have been chosen as The Green Party candidate for Streatham. I’m looking forward to fighting for the NHS, for our schools, for the environment; against a hard Brexit which will hurt the poorest the most, against Tory cuts to the social fabric, against an old form of politics that belongs in the past. Our party’s policies, values and vision for a fairer, better Britain, are the future.”
In Vauxhall the Green Party candidate will be Gulnar Hasnain. Gulnar was also the Green Party candidate for Vauxhall in 2015, coming third ahead of the Liberal Democrats, with a 7.6% share of the vote.
Gulnar said: “I am excited to be standing again for The Green Party in Vauxhall. While other parties squabble amongst themselves and vie for political position, we are the only ones truly listening to and standing up for people. In this era of Trump, Le Pen and Brexit we need a new narrative, bold ideas and a progressive agenda. We need our MPs to represent all of us.”
In the 2015 General Election the Green Party came third across the borough of Lambeth, pushing the Liberal Democrats into fourth place.
All three candidates were chosen at a joint meeting of Southwark and Lambeth Green Parties on Thursday evening, prompted by Theresa May’s announcement last Tuesday of her decision to hold a snap General Election on June 8th.
The Green Party has launched crowdfunding appeals for all three Lambeth constituencies.
