Greens win extra leave for parents of premature babies

24 January 2019

Lambeth Council is to provide extended parental leave for parents of premature babies – adopting a proposal put forward by Green Party councillors.

The council voted last night [1] to change its parental leave policy to allow councillors whose children are born prematurely to have parental leave between the baby’s due date and the actual birth date – in addition to the six months’ leave after the due date.

The council will also look to extend this to employees as part of its Workforce Strategy review of policies, following pressure from the Green Group of councillors, who form the main opposition on Lambeth Council.

Leader of the Green Group, Jonathan Bartley, said: “This is a sensible and compassionate measure, which will support parents at a very difficult time in their lives. Green Party councillors will continue to push until we win this support for all parents working for the council.”
