Green Group Leader calls on Lambeth Council to support climate change strike

11 February 2019

Councillor Jonathan Bartley has written to the Leader of the Council and Lambeth Chief Executive as thousands of pupils across the country are set to be absent from school on 15th February

Leader of Lambeth Green Group, Councillor Jonathan Bartley, has expressed support for the Youth Strike 4 Climate which is set to see pupils across the country absent themselves from school this Friday in an attempt to raise awareness about climate change. [1]

Headteachers and local councils now face a dilemma over whether or not to back their pupils. In a letter to the Leader of the Council Lib Peck and Lambeth Chief Executive Andrew Travers, Councillor Bartley requests the council “carefully consider any pupil absences as a  result of their climate strike action and take into account the positive learning experience from their citizens’ action”. [2]

The planned strike action comes following the United Nations IPCC report, published late last year, which made clear that we have just 12 years left to limit global warming to a rise of only 1.5 degrees Celsius in order to prevent a climate catastrophe.[3] Lambeth Council passed a Green motion last month declaring a climate emergency and bringing the borough’s carbon neutrality target forward to 2030. Councillor Jonathan Bartley (St Leonard’s) said:

“It’s so inspiring to see young people across the country leading the way in the fight for our future. Taking part in urgent action like this is also in itself a valuable learning experience for young people about the importance political participation and citizens’ action.”

“On 23rd January Lambeth Council declared a climate emergency and, in doing so, committed to do everything in their power to respond to the urgent threat posed by the risk of climate breakdown. They should now follow through on this promise by demonstrating their support for all the young people of Lambeth who are taking action this Friday.”
